The Apostasy Files

Bringing Accountability Where None Exists

Book Of The Month -January 2022 “A Serrated Edge”

Today we premiere our monthly book review. "A Serrated Edge" By Douglas Wilson. Our inaugural book sums up the essence of Biblical satire.

Our modern American Christian culture has been conditioned to think that those two words form an oxymoron. It violates the 11th commandment, “Thou shalt be nice”

Doug Wilson, easily one of the modern age’s most skilled satirists, employs his dazzling expertise in this book, making his case self-evident. He further makes the case that the central point of our faith is to give offense to a world that loves sin. Satire is one form (of many to be sure) of preaching used by Christ. It is found throughout Scripture. It should not be lost to us as a useful method of communication.

A case can even be made that good use of satire delivers much-needed though offensive messages with a mitigating measure of levity. It’s a reminder to all to not take ourselves too seriously even when the subject itself warrants serious concern. In our politically correct, cancel culture environment, the art of effective communication has lost much of its freedom and creativity. This book is a refreshing reminder that it need not be that way.
